Sadly, these delicious shrimp tacos were not at the Jonathan Gold event... |
Last week started off quite slow. The "big" event of the week was the Jonathan Gold Los Angeles Times food event on Wednesday in Downtown Los Angeles ... but that turned out to be surprisingly disappointing. There were only a handful of restaurants and bars, but the variety and amount of food and drink available was quite slim. In fact, some of the vendors ran out of food hours before the end of the event. I was hoping to try something new and exciting but alas there were no standouts. Some general thoughts:
- Cassia had a shrimp dish that tasted fine - but why would you choose an event like this for people to have to use their hands to sample your fare?
- Jon & Vinny's served tasty meatballs - but it was nothing out of the ordinary. In fact I still think Al Gelato has a better meatball.
- Redbird (I think ) did an odd mushroom bourbon drink. No thank you - I don't think fungi and bourbon go well together.
- Mariscos Jalisco served little spicy shrimp tacos which were probably the hit of the night for my friends. Jonathan Gold seems to love this place since it consistently makes his list. But I prefer the shrimp tacos at Mariscos 4 Vientos' shrimp tacos. I'm really not sure how Mr. Gold is picking his favorite restaurants anymore... In fact after eating these tacos, we all agreed that we had to go back to Mariscos 4 Vientos.
The only things good about the event was the company and the fact that it motivated us to return to Mariscos 4 Vientos for fabulous tacos! (See my review for Mariscos 4 Vientos here.) Clearly some of the best things I ate all week!
Mixed seafood tostada - so refreshing and a bit spicy. |
Mixed seafood cocktail (with fish, shrimp, oysters, avocado, etc.) - also refreshing but more on the sweet side. |
Currently my favorite fish tacos in LA! |
So what other good things did I do this week?
- Sephora VIB Rouge Sale! Early November, Sephora has a 20% sale for its VIB members. I look forward to it every year since makeup normally doesn't go on sale and it's a perfect time to start Christmas shopping! As a VIB Rouge member (i.e., I shop way too much), I get early access to the sale which is good because some limited editions or special colors always sell out. As usual, I went a bit crazy but it was fun!
- Netflix Original - Seven Deadly Sins. I'm running out of things to watch on Netflix - they keep losing content with each passing month. It's rather depressing really. The head honchos over at Netflix are probably scrambling to build up their library - which makes sense and I have to say some of their own shows have been quite good (e.g., Daredevil, House of Cards), which is the only reason I'm still subscribed. I'm also anticipating Jessica Jones which looks promising. But I wasn't expecting this anime - Seven Deadly Sins - to be as fabulous as it is. I literally started watching on Sunday and had to binge every night until I finished. Such a delightful show. I think I may watch it again...
It's set in a fictional world where magic still exists in the realm and the general premise is that there was a legendary group of knights with extraordinary powers that went into hiding 10 years ago because of false accusations and the journey to find them to protect the kingdom. Lots of fantastic action, laughs and romance - and yes, the weird Japanese pervy-ness does come out occasionally but it's tolerable. If you are an anime fan, check it out!
