Bourbon Street at dusk. |
Two weeks ago I went to New Orleans for a friend's 40th birthday party and it was super fun! I absolutely love New Orleans - for its music, amazing food and cocktails and its general fun-loving spirit. The standouts for this trip, besides the great company?
Crab pasta at Peche. |
Dinner at Peche (New Orleans) - This was my first time at this very hip and popular restaurant that specialized in small plates and seafood. Everything we had was quite delicious. My favorite was the crab pasta with jalapeno - great blend of flavors, and I am still thinking about this dish two weeks later which bodes well. I'm usually not a fan of steak tartare but their version was the best I've ever had.
Crawfish Etouffee at Mother's - I can't go to New Orleans without making a pilgrimage to Mother's to have their etouffee. While they are famous for their baked ham, the "ferdi" sandwich, etc., my heart belongs to the etouffee. It's soooo good and comforting. I could swim in this stuff!

Kermit Ruffins at Blue Nile - Blue Nile is a famous live music venue on Frenchmen Street. Depending on the particular act the cover could range from free - $25. (I remember the day when it almost always seemed free ... good old days.) Anyways, it's still a fun place to catch good live music. We were fortunate that Kermit Ruffins was performing the night we were there. He's always a treat to watch and has a gorgeously gravelly voice. The Blue Nile is also where I first met my husband so I'm a bit nostalgic about it.
Other highlights after returning to Los Angeles?
Monthly massage at Larchmont Sanctuary Spa - Another awesome relaxing massage from Vivian. You can read my previous review here.
Crab pasta from Wilde. |
Crab Pasta at Wilde Wine Bar - I checked out a newish wine bar/restaurant on La Brea close to where I live and I must say it's a lovely little edition to the neighborhood. Great for a date place or any wine lover. I had a wine flight (3 decent pours for $12) and was introduced to some new wines which was cool. Most of the food was pretty good, but my favorite again was the crab pasta. What is it with me and crab pasta recently? But this one is quite different from the pasta at Peche. While the Wilde pasta was tomato based with tagliatali (wide strips of homemade pasta), the one at Peche was olive oil based with capellini (super thin noodles) with a spicy kick. Both were delicious!
Eggs on toast at Republique. |
Eggs on toast with Uni at Republique - This was probably my 2nd or 3rd time at Republique, and while I think the space is gorgeous (previously Campanile) and the service is always superb, I always leave thinking that the food is overpriced. I returned for yet another friend's birthday dinner and it was super fun, but again, I felt the food prices were too high especially for food you don't really crave or remember afterwards. The only real standout for me - and it's because I love uni - was the Eggs on Toast, which was scrambled eggs on toast with a dollop of uni on toast. Very good, but you are basically paying $9 for each little bite. I would only recommend this place if you are trying to impress someone and on an expense account.
Bingewatching Jessica Jones on Netflix with cocktails and wine - I had been waiting for a while for Jessica Jones to be available for streaming on Netflix on November 20th. Woohoo! I was not disappointed. 13 episodes in 2 days - totally worth it! Krysten Ritter is very well cast and does a great job bringing a complicated and troubled character to life. Seeing David Tennant was an extra treat!
Homecooking! |
Seafood stew with lobster, crab, shrimp and cabbage. My mom made us a comforting and scrumptious treat for Sunday dinner. Beautiful huh?
Yes, I definitely had a lot of good eating. And with the holidays fast approaching, there will even be more food and drink. So I've resumed working out and portion control - just so I don't blow up like a blimp for the holiday season!
